Gaudio Barbera del Monferrato
Gaudio Barbera del Monferrato Superiore is a vibrant red wine hailing from the historic Gaudio Bricco Mondalino estate in Vignale Monferrato, Piedmont, Italy - a UNESCO-protected region north of Asti renowned for its indigenous grape varieties and calcareous clay soils.
Crafted by the Gaudio family, who have been winemakers for five generations since beginning estate bottling in 1973, this DOCG wine blends 90% Barbera with 10% Freisa grapes from hillside vineyards at around 270 meters elevation. The grapes undergo 20 days of maceration in stainless steel before six months of aging in French oak barriques and tonneaux, resulting in a structured yet approachable wine with an alcohol content of 14-15%, ideal for aging 6-8 years. Under the guidance of current winemaker Beatrice Gaudio, who took over from her father Mauro, the estate emphasizes sustainable practices, including solar energy and horse-drawn cultivation, to highlight the terroir's mineral-rich character while producing elegant expressions of Piedmont's "working people's wine."
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby to dark Bordeaux red with a dense, inky core.
Aroma: Intense notes of ripe plum, Morello cherry, and sour cherry, laced with oak spices, vanilla, cocoa, and subtle earthy incense or herbal hints like mint and basil.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with bold, juicy fruit flavors of fleshy black cherry, plum, and loganberry; balanced by crisp acidity, grippy tannins, and a touch of vanilla mid-palate; finishes long, fresh, and enveloping with velvety texture and added depth from the Freisa.
Review
Rating: 92/100 – A beautifully crafted Barbera that punches above its weight with elegance and intensity.
